"You can feel whatever you want about Elon's behaviour," Gates said, "but there is no one in our time who has done more to push the bounds of science and innovation than he has."
Could not have said it better. IMO X is nothing but trouble for him. I understand the fascination of space exploration or electrifying an industry that causes so much harm to our planet but why X?
He is, for the most part quite ok with free speech and that means any free speech. It just seems that when it’s directed at him or something of interest to him he changes his tune and to me that sounds quite authoritarian.
Great article. To answer your question Karl, I'm actually "on the fence", appreciating his visionary impact while questioning some of his practices. There is no denying that the world needs people like Elon to move us all forward, yet there is always a trade-off to consider (e.g. relationships, family...).
Absolutely Nick. I marvelled at a lot of the stuff I read in the book but I’ll admit I wouldn’t handle things like he does. He relishes the siege mentality which is the exact opposite of how I was or admired people when I was in the Marines.
That being said, I just don’t think you could achieve what he’s done in the time he’s done it in any other way.
Agree with that last paragraph Karl, but also his siege mentality, I would say you could put that down to two things, firstly his personality makeup, secondly the fact that he was bullied in his younger years can cause a defense mechanism. His stand on free speech on X as apposed to how it was moderated prior to his acquisition (from my understanding) was something that was personal to him. I’ll also add about his stance on the whole gender transition and how he said he was duped with the advice he received at the time when his son transitioned and how he’s on a mission to voice the true facts for parents who may be faced with the same issues. He has a cross to bear.
I admire his attitude to free speech (free speech should be free to all) but he is hypocritical and flippant. I mean, anyone with anything to do with Substack is severely impaired on X 😅
Agree with you on that Nick regarding relationships and family as evident with that side of his life, so I guess that is the price he (and his family & relationships) is paying for his brilliance.
Great write-up! I read the book as well, and it was a real page-turner. One key takeaway for me is that he isn't motivated by money but driven by what he believes to be more important. He identifies a problem he thinks needs fixing and then builds a company around it, whether it's space exploration or saving the planet. He's genuinely driven by big issues, not by money.
I think you can take the stance that some of the things he has said since the submarine incident feel "icky". Critique the alleged demanding pressures of being under his employ. Whilst also understanding the man is a facilitating genius that has demanded humanity continue to look to the stars.

Great article. I’m just listening to the book at the moment. It’s crazy how relentless he is
I needed a break after reading the book. Couldn’t imagine what it’s like working with or for him.

I totally agree Taylor. Some people won’t be able to understand his sense of urgency but he’s all too aware of how long meaningful change can take.
He is a genius and he loves truth and freedom. Totally in his team
Ivan’s team Musk 💪🏻🚀
