Reading this first thing in the morning, and thinking, what am I selling, as a health coach? And the answer is transformation. People will only listen to me, or buy my stuff, if they think it will lead to transformation. Yet I focus on a lot of other stuff. Need to put more thought into that.
And, what should a salesman sell me? Books as well. I rarely buy anything besides books, online courses, and coffee.
Similarly, if you want to do an experiment that the science community or the funding agencies do not care about then you haven’t found your market. It can still be done on the cheap and in one’s spare time and might result in a publication or two ( the measure of marketing quality).
In my world, the equivalent of Peter’s wise observation is that without a great science objective and an equally great funding proposal one is sunk no matter the wonderfulness of the instrument.
I know the moment perfectly but from a different perspective. I am an experimental high-energy particle physicist/astrophysicist and I am an instrument design expert. The thing that comes to me that I burn to create is usually a new type of instrument. I have been fortunate to have a job with NASA that gives me my outlet and I have been successful enough with funding to keep my interests going since 1990. No I am in the odd position of being beyond retirement age (73) but still working because I have more instrument/experiment babies I want to bring into the Wirld.
Finding your starving crowd it’s indeed the most important for any entrepreneur! Thanks once again, Karl!
My pleasure 😊
Thanks for distilling these gems!
My pleasure John.

The starving crowd metaphor is up there with the best i've ever heard. It's just so easy to remember and so vivid.
This applies to theories and philosophies as well. I note that Darwin was both a product of his time and a maker of it.

Oops World!

For me, those feelings usually come about 3:00 AM.
I rarely find those things taking place in my soul on a Saturday.
